IFPEN is ranked 9th globally for its innovations in the field of electrical grids and 1st in stationary storage, according to a study conducted by the European Patent Office and the International Energy Agency. This result reflects IFPEN's commitment to addressing the new challenges posed by the energy transition.

IFPEN’s Expertise Meets the Challenges of Electrical Grids

To meet the goals of the energy transition, global electricity consumption must grow rapidly while integrating more renewable resources. This transition imposes significant challenges on electrical grids, such as operational flexibility and the development of storage solutions.
IFPEN’s engineers are actively working to address these challenges by developing advanced electricity storage and management/control technologies to ensure both global and local stability of electrical and thermal networks.
 

Global Recognition 

IFPEN's work has been recognized in the study "Patents for enhanced electricity grids: a global trend analysis of innovation in physical and smart grids," conducted jointly by the European Patent Office and the International Energy Agency. This study highlights technological trends in electrical grids.
The study places IFPEN 9th in the top 15 public research organizations worldwide for the number of patent families filed between 2011 and 2022 in the field of grids and 1st for technologies specific to stationary storage.
 

For reference, previous studies by the European Patent Office have ranked IFPEN:

5th global patent filer and 1st global research organization in the field of chemical or biological recycling of plastics (for the period 2009–2019);
2nd global research organization in hydrogen technologies (for the period 2011–2020);
4th global research organization in low-carbon technologies, including CCUS and alternative fuels (for the period 2000–2019).
