IFPEN pays tribute to Prof. Maurice Bergougnou

December 2015

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Prof. Maurice Bergougnou, Emeritus Professor at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, on 30 November in his 88th year.

A graduate of ENSIC School of Engineering and then the University of Minnesota, Maurice Bergougnou was one of the world's leading specialists in process fluidization and plant design, having spent the early part of his career working in the American oil industry.

When IFPEN first began working in the field of fluidized bed reactors in the 1980s, it built up a fruitful partnership with Prof. Bergougnou's laboratory. As a result of this collaboration, a number of research scientists were trained and completed their theses under his supervision, three in the IFPEN-Lyon laboratories and five in the University of Western Ontario's laboratories. During this period, Maurice Bergougnou also taught fluidization at IFP School.

Maurice Bergougnou was a very modest, kind, approachable character with immense human qualities. To all those lucky and privileged enough to work with him, in addition to his knowledge of fluidization, he also passed on his own particular research style, based on constant questioning and curiosity, reflection and in-depth study, as well as a desire to be creative and see things through to completion.

Professor Bergougnou made a significant contribution to IFPEN in a field pivotal to the development of its innovations.
