Thermodynamics and biobased products: Prof. Mikhail Varfolomeev, scientific visitor from Kazan Federal University (Russian Federation)

September 2017

Prof. Mikhail Varfolomeev

From 3 July to 27 July 2017, IFPEN’s Applied Chemistry and Physical Chemistry Research Division hosted Professor Mikhail Varfolomeev, currently associate professor in the Department of Physical Chemistry at Kazan Federal University (Russia).

In 2015, Kazan Federal University (FKU) and IFP Energies nouvelles signed a cooperation agreement during a visit by an IFPEN’s delegation. It was as part of this agreement that Professor Varfolomeev was welcomed at IFPEN as a visitor within the context of the Chair dedicated to Thermodynamics for biofuels .

During his stay, he familiarized himself with the thermodynamic modeling tools developed at IFPEN. Professor Varfolomeev’s work also focused on the experimental determination, using calorimetric measurements and headspace chromatography, of binary molecular interactions in multifunctional oxygenated molecules, characteristics of biobased products. These measurements, carried out in collaboration with IFPEN’s Process Experiments and Physics and Analysis Divisions, followed on from a project led at FKU. This research has thus been conducted in a context of international, interdisciplinary collaboration.

The experimental results obtained will be used to evaluate and improve the PC-SAFT predictive thermodynamic model developed by IFPEN, for its application to multifunctional, molecular structures.
