ERAMET is currently developing a lithium production project at the Centenario-Ratones deposit, located in Salta province, in north-western Argentina.
Lithium is used in a broad range of applications, particularly in the field of energy storage.
In 2025, the lithium-ion battery market will account for more than half of the global demand for lithium, compared to almost one third today, whereas the total global market itself will have at least doubled in size.
The Centenario-Ratones deposit contains very significant resources, heralding the possibility of large-scale industrial production at the site.
ERAMET, working in partnership with IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), has developed an innovative and competitive lithium extraction process that is far more environmentally friendly than conventional techniques. IFPEN has contributed its expertise in the field of adsorbent synthesis and application.
In 2016, ERAMET's lithium project enters its final development phases.
The direct extraction process has been developed and optimized following more than two years of continuous laboratory testing and steering.
The technique will now be applied on a pre-industrial scale to enable lithium carbonate, the most widely marketed lithium salt, to be qualified by future customers. Work to finalize the engineering studies is also under way.
