In 2014, the start-up Enogia and IFPEN agreed a strategic partnership deal concerning the joint development and marketing of a range of Rankine technologies to convert heat into electricity. |

The innovation is based on the use of highly efficient micro-turbines capable of producing 5 to 100kW of electricity. The aim is to recover lost heat from the exhaust gases of IC engines in both stationary installations (generators, cogeneration installations) and transport, particularly rail and maritime. |
Created in 2009 by four young engineers, the Marseille-based start-up Enogia specializes in ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) systems converting waste heat into electricity. At the core of its performance is a highly innovative micro-turbine that serves as a power plant, designed and manufactured by Enogia. The start-up is a world leader in the field of low-power turbines (from 5kW).
The partnership with IFPEN enables Enogia to extend the power range of its turbines (up to100kW) and address the needs of the transport market. IFPEN is lending its scientific and technical support to optimize the system's architecture in order to further boost its efficiency.
Enogia's technology now makes it possible to convert heat flows from 100kW up to 2MW, even at low temperatures (from 85°C).
There are a multitude of applications and Enogia's ORC systems have already been installed at a number of agricultural and industrialsites:
Several studies are under way concerning the installation of the technology in household waste incineration units and water-treatment plant sludge incinerators, as well as the recovery of industrial furnace cooling water.
Concerning the recovery of heat lost in engines, Enogia's ORC systems make it possible to recover the heat from exhaust gases and/or cooling systems in all types of IC engines (diesel, gas, biogas, gasoline).
The 5, 30 and 100kWe ORC systems produce between 5 and 12% electric energy, as a function of the heat recovered, and may make it possible to achieve engine fuel savings of up to 10%.
They are marketed by Enogia.

In these two markets, Enogia and IFPEN are among the first to propose a range of highly reliable and competitively priced ORC products available for various integration levels (self-standing module or to be integrated).
Since 2013, Enogia's ORC systems have been operating at a number of farms and waste landfill sites.
Pilot units are in the process of being installed at industrial and research sites.
The IFP Group Powertrain Technologies brand encompasses the eco-system represented by IFPEN's portfolio of partners
IFPEN Transports Energie has been part of the Carnot Institutes network since 2006.
This label is testimony to the scientific quality of IFPEN's R&I projects and its capacity to work closely with socioeconomic partners to contribute to the development of SMEs and intermediate-sized companies.
