With more than 30 years of expertise, IFPEN is a favorite partner of industry for the qualification and development of solutions to measure the impact of all fuel types, and ensure the effective treatment of pollutants.

The impact of fuels

IFPEN has expertise in fuel chains (conventional and alternative) and combustion systems adapted to each fuel, enabling it to offer a comprehensive range of services:

  • qualification of the chains: economic and environmental impact, characteristics and functional properties for land, aviation and maritime applications
  • Breakthrough combustion systems for the use of gas in engines: adaptation of concepts according to the use and the market needs (Stoichiometric, Lean Burn / Dual Fuel), management of gas quality variabilities
  • characterization of the evolution of fuel in its environment: behavior when cold, resistance to oxidation, formation of deposits
  • development of concepts and technologies to maximize the potential of the fuel/engine pairing: adapted octane level, potential of low-cetane fuels (in the naphtha range). This research is carried out as part of a long-term partnership agreement with Saudi Aramco


The treatment of pollutant emissions

IFPEN works on the development of technological solutions that meet future standards and society's requirements:

  • combined NOx and particulate treatment systems, injection and control system for reducing agent and exhaust gas mixing to push back the boundaries of SCR system
  • sensors and control laws for the management and diagnosis of after-treatment systems: soot sensor developed in partnership with Electricfil, etc.
  • a comprehensive understanding of pollutant emissions: size and number of particles, non-regulated pollutants

To perform this work, IFPEN has developed dedicated after-treatment models, including the Exhaust library marketed by Siemens PLM Software.

"The Aramco Fuel Research Center was established as a long term partnership with IFPEN back in 2013, to develop fuel and engine technology solutions where the benefits can be demonstrated on actual vehicles. Two research programs are currently ongoing, motivated by the increasing the efficiency of fuels manufacture and anticipated surplus of light-end products. The collaboration allows Aramco to capitalize on IFPEN’s established innovations, facilities, resources and links to various European automakers, in order to accelerate the innovation cycle of various fuel technologies pursued by Aramco."

Research for enterprises

IFPEN Transports Energie has been part of the Carnot Institutes network since 2006.
This label is testimony to the scientific quality of IFPEN's R&I projects and its capacity to work closely with socioeconomic partners to contribute to the development of SMEs and intermediate-sized companies.
