Reservoir Simulation

The objective is to optimize production through reservoir modeling integrated with the flow simulator and uncertainty quantification.
The key benefits of the workbench developed by IFPEN are the following:

  • a software platform for the whole reservoir systems modeling;
  • a single unified reservoir simulator for all the recovery processes (PumaFlow™);
  • high performance computations through massive parallelisations and efficient numerical schemes;
  • an extensive uncertainty and optimization workflows throughout the reservoir modeling chain (CougarFlow™);
  • a multi-disciplinary approach bridging the gap between reservoir geology and reservoir engineering.

The OpenFlow Suite™ is marketed by Beicip-Franlab.


  PumaFlow™ is a multi-purpose multi physics dynamic simulator and visualization tool to predict and optimize hydrocarbon production with conventional and advanced (EOR) methods. It can be used for all recovery processes: a reference solution for fractured reservoirs with a dual medium simulation based on rigorous formulation of matrix-fracture exchanges, a reliable solution for various Thermal processes (steam injection, air injection, in-situ combustion, SAGD process), an advanced Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) model to support Chemical EOR flooding, a CO2-EOR option, and capabilities for modeling of shale gas reserves (models adsorbed gas on the shale matrix). The application provides a fully interactive computational preparation and steering framework, together with interactive post-processing which features a powerful and state-of-the-art user interface tailored to the visualization and manipulation of multiple data sets and scenarios. PumaFlow™ is used by The EOR Alliance.


Ongoing Research & Innovation items:

  • chemical EOR: multi-chemical coupling, effects of temperature on chemical EOR;
  • development of new models: aquathermolyse model (forecasting gas generation, H2S with steam production), 3-phase hysteretic fractal model (KrPc), asphaltene precipitation model (as a function of reservoir pressure);
  • coupled fluid flow - geomechanical simulation (PumaFlow™Abaqus).

• PVTFlow™ is a PVT package that simulates the thermodynamic behavior of petroleum fluids. It can be used as a stand-alone software or to generate automatically efficient equation of state (EOS) models or Black Oil (BO) models for simulators such as PumaFlow™.

ArcTight aims at developing a parallel reservoir simulator prototype dedicated to simulate the production of stimulated fractured tight reservoir with increasing accuracy and predictability. It is based on the optimized HPC framework ArcGeoSim™ with some advances in technology, such as AMR and the use of unstructured meshes. The prototype code will integrate innovative solutions to complexities specific of unconventional reservoirs (for example, an original approach treating fractures - natural and hydraulic) as well as a series of options corresponding to particular physical characteristics of such media. The program is planned for 3 years, starting in mid 2016.
